"Rev. Gary Davis was one of the greatest of the guitar playing gospel singers and a true original and this CD presents a master in his prime. The first two sides from July 23, 1935 are rare examples of him singing blues and in addition to his wonderful singing features some mind boggling guitar playing that justifies his claim that he taught quite a bit to Blind Boy Fuller. The rest of his performances from 1935 are all religious songs and it's remarkable how different his approach his - both in his singing which is rougher and in his guitar playing which is every bit as fluid as his blues playing but with a very different feel that is hard to explain but is immediately apparent. Davis moved from South Carolina to New York in 1944 where he lived the rest of his life. From 1945 is an interesting instrumental Civil War March which shows a number of influences and from 1949 his last two recordings for an African-American market. Magnificent and moving singing and playing throughout. Sound is good and there are informative notes by Chris Smith. (FS)"
